Review: Luminara, The Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection’s Newest Superyacht

I recently had the pleasure of experiencing Luminara, the third and newest superyacht of The Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection, during a voyage through Alaska sailing from Vancouver, Canada. Sailing through some of the world’s most spectacular wilderness landscapes provided a particularly fitting introduction to a yacht whose philosophy centers on discovery, connection, and the freedom of traveling by sea. Having experienced Luminara first-hand, I was able to explore not only its elegant public spaces and spacious suites, but also the many details that distinguish it from a conventional luxury cruise ship. In this review, I take a closer look at what it is like to sail aboard Luminara, from its design and accommodation to its dining venues, art collection, marina, spa, pools, and service.

Following the successful launches of Evrima in 2022 and Ilma in 2024, Luminara represents the next evolution of The Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection’s approach to ultra-luxury travel at sea, combining the intimacy and freedom of private yachting with the refined hospitality associated with The Ritz-Carlton. Accommodating up to 452 guests in 226 suites, Luminara introduces a new level of scale while retaining an exclusive atmosphere. More than simply transporting guests between destinations, Luminara has been conceived as a floating luxury resort where the journey itself becomes an integral part of the experience. Its sophisticated interiors, extensive art collection, diverse dining concepts, expansive marina, wellness facilities, and carefully considered outdoor spaces all contribute to an experience that feels distinctly more like yachting than traditional cruising.

Luminara features in my top 10 list of the world’s most luxurious superyachts and cruise ships.

Have you sailed with The Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection? If so, I would love to hear about your experience in the comments.

In this review (more info and photos below my YouTube video):

Disclosure: The Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection provided this voyage on a complimentary basis. All opinions and observations are my own.

Pros & Things I Like

  • At 242 meters (794 feet) in length, Luminara is an impressive superyacht, yet its proportions and layout have been carefully conceived to preserve the sense of intimacy associated with private yachting. Its sleek exterior profile was designed by Helsinki-based studio Aivan, drawing inspiration from the timeless elegance and streamlined silhouettes of contemporary private yachts. Rather than the imposing appearance often associated with large cruise ships, Luminara has a graceful, flowing profile that sits naturally within the seascape. The yacht’s generous beam and multiple open-air decks create a remarkable sense of space, while large expanses of glass and thoughtfully positioned outdoor areas maintain a constant connection with the ocean. Its design also allows for an unusually high space-to-guest ratio, with expansive public areas that never feel overwhelming. Technically, Luminara was engineered for long-distance voyages and a diverse range of itineraries, from the Asia-Pacific to the remote waters of Alaska, with sailings from Vancouver. During my voyage, I found the yacht comfortable and stable, including while sailing through the more exposed waters of Alaska.
  • The beautiful design of Luminara is a sophisticated interpretation of contemporary yacht living, favoring understated elegance over traditional notions of opulence. Inspired by its name, meaning “light” in Latin, the interiors emphasize openness, fluidity, and a seamless connection between the yacht and the ocean. Public spaces were conceived by Toronto-based Chapi Design Luxury Division, while London-based AD Associates designed the suites, with lighting by DPA. Together, they have created a refined, residential atmosphere using warm walnut woods, Arabescato Corchia marble, smoked glass, bronze accents, and a palette of soft blues, warm greys, and deep ocean tones. Curved architectural forms echo the movement of the sea, while reflective surfaces and carefully considered lighting create a constantly changing interplay between natural and artificial light. The result feels less like a conventional cruise ship and more like an elegant private residence at sea. Bespoke furnishings, including pieces from renowned Italian brands such as Minotti, Giorgetti, Poltrona Frau, Molteni, and Talenti, add further depth and craftsmanship, while subtle ruby accents provide discreet touches of color.
  • Luminara by The Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection features 226 spacious suites, each with its own private terrace overlooking the ocean. There are eight suite categories, ranging from the entry-level Terrace Suite to the yacht’s most prestigious Owner’s Suite, with The Signature Suite, Grand Suite, View Suite, Luminara Suite, Residential Suite, and Concierge Suite completing the collection. Across all categories, the design follows the yacht’s understated contemporary aesthetic, combining warm woods, refined marble, smoked glass, and bespoke furnishings with generous windows that bring the ever-changing seascape indoors. The private terraces are particularly appealing, providing a peaceful outdoor space from which to enjoy the scenery, whether sailing through Alaska’s dramatic fjords or cruising between Mediterranean islands. At the upper end of the accommodation spectrum, the Residential Suite offers a more residential interpretation of life at sea, with sophisticated materials including dark oak and Emperador marble, while the highest categories feature furnishings from prestigious Italian design houses. At the pinnacle is the Owner’s Suite, offering the ultimate expression of space, privacy, and exclusivity aboard Luminara.
  • During my voyage through Alaska, I had the pleasure of staying in a Grand Suite, measuring approximately 52 sq m (560 sq ft) with a private terrace of up to 18.5 sq m (199 sq ft). The suite felt more like a refined hotel residence than a cruise cabin, with a separate bedroom, generous living and dining area, and dual walk-in wardrobes. My private terrace offered a wonderful front-row seat to Alaska’s spectacular scenery. The bedroom featured a luxurious custom king bed with sumptuous linens, while the marble bathroom had a double vanity, soaking tub, separate shower, and Bvlgari bath amenities. The welcome amenities included a chilled bottle of Moët & Chandon Champagne and a luxurious box filled with Aurora chocolate bonbons. Fresh flowers added a nice touch. The sofa in my suite could also be converted into a sofa bed, allowing the suite to accommodate an additional guest – although this feature is not available in every suite category. Additional amenities include an espresso machine with complimentary coffee and tea, a personalized minibar, an in-suite safe, a robe and slippers, and hypoallergenic pillows on request.
  • Luminara’s communal areas have been designed to create a relaxed, residential atmosphere, with the Living Room on Deck 5 serving as the yacht’s principal social hub. Primarily an elegant lounge, it also features a chic bar that becomes particularly lively in the evening, when guests gather for drinks and entertainment. During the day, the space hosts excursion briefings, destination talks, and other presentations, making it a natural meeting point before heading ashore. Immediately adjacent is a dedicated cigar room called The Humidor, providing a more intimate retreat for cigar enthusiasts. The Living Room also flows into the yacht’s shopping, home to prestigious boutiques including Cartier, IWC Schaffhausen, and Piaget, as well as a curated selection of luxury fashion, jewelry, accessories, and lifestyle brands. Several concierge desks are conveniently positioned throughout Decks 4 and 5, providing easy access to Guest Services. When the weather is favorable, the social heart of the yacht moves outdoors to the upper deck, where a stylish bar is surrounded by chic loungers and sunbeds, serving drinks throughout the day. Together, these spaces give Luminara the atmosphere of a sophisticated private resort, with plenty of opportunities to socialize or simply relax without ever feeling crowded.
  • Luxury shopping takes on a new dimension aboard Luminara, where retail has been transformed into a carefully curated lifestyle experience in partnership with Starboard Luxury. For the first time in The Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection, dedicated boutiques showcasing Cartier, IWC Schaffhausen, and Piaget offer fine watches and jewelry, along with personalized service from brand ambassadors. The main Boutique goes beyond traditional cruise retail, with a considered selection of resort wear, accessories, gifts, home décor, and exclusive co-branded apparel. Fashion highlights include Johanna Ortiz, Orlebar Brown, and La DoubleJ, while the accessories selection ranges from vintage Hermès Birkin and Kelly bags to Stella McCartney handbags and Olympia Le-Tan clutches. Fine jewelry comes from designers including Ileana Makri, Lauren Rubinski, and Sydney Evan, whose men’s collection debuts at sea. As Luminara travels between regions and continents, the retail offering evolves with regional discoveries, exclusive collaborations, and destination-inspired finds, making shopping an integral part of the wider journey.
  • Luminara features two distinct pool areas, both of which successfully capture the relaxed atmosphere of a private yacht. The main pool is located midship on Deck 10 and is a long, rectangular pool, flanked by comfortable loungers. Two small stairways lead down towards the bar area, where additional loungers and sunbeds create a relaxed setting for drinks and socializing. Towards the bow, more sunbeds surround two jacuzzis, a particularly welcome feature when sailing in cooler regions such as Alaska, allowing guests to enjoy the outdoors while staying warm. Even more impressive is the infinity pool at the aft of Deck 5, featuring built-in in-pool loungers and sweeping views directly over the yacht’s wake. Although there are fewer loungers around this pool than on Deck 10, the atmosphere is more intimate and the setting particularly striking. Both pool decks have a distinctly yacht-like aesthetic, with understated materials, and enjoy unobstructed ocean views rather than the busy, resort-style atmosphere often found on larger cruise ships. Together, they provide two very different but equally appealing settings for swimming, relaxing, and enjoying the sea.
  • Dining is, without question, one of Luminara’s greatest strengths. The yacht features five restaurants, spanning Italian, Mediterranean, Middle Eastern, pan-Asian, and international cuisine, and I found the food genuinely exceptional across every venue. In fact, the culinary experience ranks among the best I have enjoyed during my many years of traveling, to the point that Luminara almost feels like a gastronomic cruise in its own right. My personal favorite was Haesu Bit, the yacht’s pan-Asian restaurant, but each venue delivered an impressively high standard.
    • Haesu Bit – My favorite restaurant – offers sophisticated pan-Asian cuisine inspired by Japan, Korea, Vietnam, Thailand, and Cantonese cooking. The Japanese influences are particularly impressive, with a live sushi bar, beautifully executed dishes, and refined flavors.
    • Seta su Luminara is Luminara’s signature restaurant, created in collaboration with Michelin-starred chef Fabio Trabocchi. This restaurant – open only for dinner – presents contemporary Italian cuisine inspired by Venice’s historic spice trade, including an elaborate eight-course tasting menu.
    • Developed with James Beard Award-winning chef Michael Mina, the Beach House on Deck 6 (right next to the Infinity Pool) is a relaxed venue that combines Mediterranean and Middle Eastern flavors with influences from his Egyptian heritage. The Beach House is open for lunch and dinner.
    • Azur on Luminara is a chic, versatile restaurant centered on seasonal ingredients, with menus that evolve according to the destinations visited during the voyage. Azur is open for breakfast, lunch and dinner.
    • Mistral on Deck 10 serves Mediterranean coastal dining, with a focus on fresh seafood and expertly grilled meats. The venue features large floor-to-ceiling windows, offering incredible views. Mistral is open for breakfast, lunch and dinner.
  • Luminara features a diverse collection of bars, each offering a distinctly different setting and atmosphere. At the aft of Deck 10, the Mistral Bar is an elegant spot for a pre- or post-dinner drink, with sweeping ocean views, while the adjacent Pool Bar serves guests relaxing around the main pool. The Living Room Bar on Deck 5 is perhaps the liveliest indoor option, transforming from a relaxed daytime lounge into a vibrant evening venue with live music and entertainment. Forward on Deck 9, the Art Bar, part of the Observation Lounge & Terrace, is particularly impressive, combining sophisticated cocktails with panoramic views through floor-to-ceiling windows and access to an open-air terrace overlooking the bow. The outdoor terrace provides a wonderful setting for a sunset drink, with 270-degree views of the surrounding seascape. Together, these venues give Luminara a surprisingly varied bar scene, ranging from casual poolside drinks to sophisticated evening cocktails, while retaining the intimate, yacht-like atmosphere that defines the ship.
  • The Ritz-Carlton Spa on Deck 4 provides Luminara with a comprehensive wellness sanctuary, offering a tranquil retreat after a day of exploring ashore or at sea. The spa features 11 treatment rooms and offers an extensive menu of treatments using renowned brands including ESPA, 111SKIN, and Pisterzi. The program includes destination-inspired experiences such as the Awakening Bamboo Massage and Detoxifying Wellness Poultice Treatment, reflecting the yacht’s itineraries across Asia and beyond. Adjacent to the spa is a beauty salon and hair salon, allowing guests to combine wellness treatments with professional grooming and beauty services. The deck is also home to a well-equipped fitness center, with modern cardio and strength-training equipment and ample space for independent workouts. I particularly appreciated the fact that the wellness facilities feel integrated into the wider yacht rather than treated as an afterthought: the atmosphere is calm and contemporary, while the ocean remains a constant presence. Whether the aim is an intensive workout, a relaxing treatment, or simply some time dedicated to personal wellbeing, the facilities provide everything needed to maintain a sense of balance throughout the voyage.
  • One of Luminara’s most distinctive features is its expansive Marina, which brings guests remarkably close to the water and captures the spirit of private yachting. Located at sea level, the Marina, Marina Terrace, and Marina Beach form a dedicated waterfront area centered around a floating lounge platform with its own pool, allowing guests to swim almost directly in the open ocean. In warmer destinations, The Marina serves as a beach-club-style gateway to activities such as kayaking, paddleboarding, Seabob, and electric foiling boards. In colder regions, however, it takes on a completely different role. During my voyage through Alaska, the Marina became the main departure point for Zodiac excursions, allowing us to step directly from the yacht into the expedition boats and venture into Alaska’s remote wilderness. This direct connection with the water makes the Marina particularly versatile, adapting naturally to the destination and itinerary. More than simply an onboard amenity, it is central to Luminara’s identity, bringing guests closer to the ocean and transforming each anchorage into an opportunity for exploration and discovery.
  • Ultimately, what elevates Luminara beyond its impressive design and facilities is the quality of the service, and one aspect that stood out throughout my voyage was the phenomenal service dedication of the entire crew. From the restaurants and bars to the housekeeping, concierge, spa, and expedition teams, everyone I encountered was consistently warm, attentive, professional, and genuinely eager to assist. It was clear that the crew had been exceptionally well trained by The Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection, with the polished yet natural service one would expect from the Ritz-Carlton name. Importantly, the hospitality never felt overly formal or intrusive; instead, it was intuitive and highly personalized, creating the relaxed atmosphere of a private yacht. This is precisely where Luminara succeeds in translating the Ritz-Carlton philosophy to life at sea: thoughtful details, anticipatory service, and genuine human interaction rather than ceremony for its own sake. Combined with the yacht’s high crew-to-guest ratio, the result is an experience that feels remarkably personal. After several days onboard, I found that it was not simply the beautiful surroundings or sophisticated facilities that stayed with me most, but the consistently outstanding people who made the voyage so enjoyable.

Cons & What To Know Before Booking

  • It is genuinely difficult to fault Luminara itself. Throughout my voyage, I found the yacht exceptionally well conceived, beautifully maintained, and remarkably consistent in both design and service. If I had to identify one area for improvement during my voyage, it would be the Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection app. I found it somewhat slow and, at times, surprisingly limited in the information available. More importantly, I found that the full functionality became available once the voyage had started, meaning that restaurants and other onboard experiences cannot necessarily be booked in advance through the app.
  • Luminara’s onboard fare is highly inclusive and, in my view, one of the strongest aspects of the experience. The fare covers all meals across the included dining venues, 24-hour in-suite dining, a wide selection of premium beverages including fine wines, spirits, cocktails, beers, soft drinks, and specialty coffees and teas, as well as Wi-Fi, onboard entertainment and enrichment, fitness classes, marina-style watersports, and onboard gratuities. The inclusions make it remarkably easy to enjoy the yacht without constantly thinking about additional charges. There are, however, two notable additional costs: shore excursions are charged separately, while Seta su Luminara, the yacht’s signature restaurant, carries an additional supplement. Given Luminara’s overall positioning, I would have preferred these two elements to be included as well, though this is a relatively minor criticism given how comprehensive the rest of the experience is.
  • I recommend booking popular experiences as early as possible. Excursions, in particular, can fill up remarkably quickly, sometimes because space is limited by local permits. During my Alaska voyage, for example, the Anan Wildlife Observatory excursion in Wrangell was limited to just 12 permits. Restaurants and spa appointments can also become fully booked, particularly during peak times. I therefore recommend making reservations as soon as you board — or even before the voyage if you have access to a travel advisor who can arrange them on your behalf. This is especially important if you have specific restaurants, excursions, or spa treatments that you do not want to miss.

My Final Thoughts & Verdict

Luminara delivers a compelling balance of contemporary design, spacious accommodations, destination-led dining, and genuinely personal service. The additional charges for shore excursions and Seta su Luminara, along with the limitations I encountered in the app, are worth understanding before booking. Even with those considerations, the yacht itself ranks among the most refined and enjoyable travel experiences I have had at sea. What stayed with me most was how naturally Luminara connected the comfort of a luxury resort with the changing landscapes outside.
