Stay a little further from the centre just a short taxi ride from the action, at the grand hotel, Prestonfield House. Arguably the most opulent and decadent address in the area, here peacocks roam the manicured grounds, antiques fill the glamorous rooms and silver service is standard. It has a croquet lawn, putting green and even a helicopter landing area. The traditional afternoon tea is a Prestonfield highlight, taken by a roaring fire, in rose-filled gardens or in the gothic tea house. Found on George IV Bridge in the Old Town, this modern hotel provides rooms with plenty of natural light and open vistas. Seven room categories (including family suites) all include Nespresso machines, individual climate controls, bathrobes and slippers. Norton House Hotel
This gorgeous country house hotel, takes visitors a little further afield. It’s 20 minutes from the city centre but offers close proximity to the airport, which is a few minutes by car. Set on 55 acres of grounds, the 19th-century building is flanked by mature trees and fields, giving a true sense of escape. Popular for weddings, couples’ breaks and spa days, it’s also dog-friendly. Norton House has 83 bedrooms (a mix of doubles, feature doubles and fabulous suites ranging in size, check out their Kingdom Suite), a brasserie, a conservatory lounge and both alfresco and private dining options.
