In celebration of renowned artist James Turrell’s 80th birthday, Scotland’s oldest working distillery, The Glenturret, and renowned crystal maker Lalique have teamed up to create an exclusive whisky decanter – Eight Decades. A limited edition of just 80, the Eight Decades decanter is inspired by civilisations in Egypt and presented for the first time at the new Lalique Art Gallery in Burlington Arcade, London on 16th May 2023.
The design of the decanter is a perfect balance of flowing curves and tapered lines, with a rectangular base and a deep blue crystal stopper with a pyramidal shape inspired by Egyptian monuments, in which light served ceremonial purposes. Developing the artist’s vision for this creation posed a difficult challenge for the team at Lalique, as they strived to ensure that the violet crystal injected into the neck of the decanter was evenly distributed and magnified the amber whisky inside.
John Laurie, Managing Director, The Glenturret said, “It is a proud moment for us to be working with James Turrell – a lot of hard work and emotions have gone into designing and creating this decanter. The Eight Decades decanter encapsulates The Glenturret’s very essence: an understated aesthetic, crafted by many talented hands who are all custodians of the skills required to create such a beautiful decanter and liquid. The design of Eight Decades is a departure from more traditional whisky bottles and a homage to the artist as it commemorates his eightieth birthday – we feel it is a piece of art just as much as it is a whisky decanter holding a delicious liquid.”
The Glenturret’s Whisky Maker, Bob Dalgarno, has carefully crafted Eight Decades with insight from his conversations with James Turrell. Comprised of 8 casks, ranging from 1987-1998, this whisky offers aromas of dark dried fruit, chocolate orange, ginger cake, red berries, fresh apples, and softer oak. On the palate, enjoy gentle wood spices, rich fruit cake laced with treacle and honeycomb, burnished oak, and a long, mellow finish.
Eight Decades is priced at £80,000 and will be primarily available for pre-orders in May through privateclient@theglenturret.com or by contacting your Lalique Boutiques on Conduit Street and in Burlington Arcade, London.
