Celebrating more than 100 of the most distinctive and innovative artists working today, Prime’s subjects were all born between 1980 and 1995 and represent 41 different nations. The book offers a cutting-edge perspective on the art world’s next generation of stars.
Blazing new trails
The artists featured were all nominated by a jury of the same age group, sourced from the world’s top art institutions. Working with many different materials, the selection includes things from different genres. Some operate within more traditional mediums – painting, drawing, sculpting, photographing, creating ceramic or collages – but from a new perspective. Others are experimental in their work, using unconventional and less tangible materials, such as light, sound and online digital spaces. All are pushing the boundaries of what art is and what it can be.
Over 750 illustrations
Avoiding a sense of hierarchy, the artists are organised alphabetically on the pages. Each receives two full spreads, with newly commissioned text explaining their practice on the
first page, followed by three full pages of images. Each artist’s section receives a colour tint, fully applied to the first page of text and appearing on the outer edges of their subsequent image pages.
Who is making the most exciting art today?
The next generation of museum directors, chief curators, art critics and top collectors (including representatives from the Whitney, Barbican, Gagosian and Phillips) answer
this question in the book. Selected artists including Kudzanai-Violet Hwami, Tschabalala Self, Salman Toor and Issy Wood reflect the perspectives of nominators who are shaping the contours of our present and future art world.
