Edinburgh centre’s cool neighbour is now the Michelin star capital of Scotland. Once a busy working port, it’s now home to luxury mini liners like Fingal and the Royal Yacht Britannia, with the odd cargo ship still coming and going. The city’s trendiest are moving due north in their droves, to be near the bohemian cafes, creative arts spaces, funky bars, lively Shore area and world-class restaurants that are blossoming in the district. And great hotels have followed to EH6 also, offering proximity to the waterfront and in many cases, better value than some of their EH1 counterparts. Here are our picks in Leith.
Fingal
If you’re looking for something a little bit different in the luxury stakes when staying in Edinburgh then Fingal is the place for you. Fingal is a luxury floating hotel berthed in Leith with many of the city’s finest restaurants (including two Michelin starred The Kitchin and Restaurant Martin Wishart) right in its doorstep (or should we say boardwalk!). In 2000 the ship retired from its Northern Lighthouse Board service and has since been meticulously transformed into one of Edinburgh’s top luxury hotels (read our review here). With 23 beautifully appointed cabins, a splendid events space and delightful on-board restaurant, which serves a delicious menu with top class service –it is clear to see why it has been voted as Edinburgh’s best luxury hotel on Trip Advisor. We highly recommend a stay here.
