At the mouth of the Bay of Kotor and the foot of Mount Orjen, lies Herceg Novi, the Montenegrin coastal city. Founded in 1382, it has plenty of history, along with direct access to the stunning Adriatic Sea. Its Old Town area is small, authentic and not overrun with tourists like many others in this part of the world. It’s a charming place to wander and get a little lost, stopping off at a local cafe and some shops. Herceg Novi is also a super spot to hire a kayak and explore on the water, or to take a sightseeing boat trip (the Blue Cave is well worth a look).
One&Only Portonovi
This stunning seaside resort is the first One&Only property to be launched in Europe. It’s stylish and chic (think muslin-slung mahogany daybeds and hanging egg chairs beside an infinity pool), yet family-friendly (there’s kids’ club and spacious suites). The decor is by Hirsch Bedner Associates, displaying opulent contemporary elegance. The Chenot Espace Medical Spa is a major draw for guests seeking cutting edge treatments or detox programmes, with doctors, nutritionists and beauticians working side by side. One&Only Portonovi has three restaurants serving Asian fare by the pool, Italian food on the beach and local dishes on the terrace.
Lazure Marina & Hotel
Housed in an 18th century stone building with Venetian architecture, this five-star property is just outside of the centre. 25 serenely decorated bedrooms are accented by original features and large abstracts on the walls. Guests staying at the hotel can enjoy a leisurely dinner by the waterfront, take breakfast in the courtyard eatery and lunch at the venue’s beach bar. There’s also a spa (with a dreamy pool, hammam and sauna), a quaint chapel for hosting weddings, the option of interconnecting rooms and a kids’ club. Suites come with romantic in-room freestanding tubs.
