2021 was supposed to be a thrilling year for new glamorous hotels opening across the globe. Unfortunately, the coronavirus pandemic continued to batter the world, posing major challenges to the hospitality industry. But as the world is slowly reopening to tourism – and closing again for several destinations – so have new hotels, offering some hope to travelers in unprecedented times. From Africa to the Americas and Asia to Europe, here’s my selection of the best new hotels (89 in total) that opened their doors in 2021. 11. SIX SENSES FORT BARWARA, INDIA
Historic Rajasthan is the setting for a 14th century fort that has been beautifully converted to become Six Senses Fort Barwara, a three-hour drive from Jaipur. Originally owned by the Rajasthani Royal Family, the new Six Senses sits directly opposite the temple, Chauth ka Barwara Mandir. The sensitive conservation project features 48 suites and incorporates a palace and two temples within the walled site that reinterprets the gracious and regal ambience of a bygone era. Two restaurants serve classic dishes and modern cuisine based on fresh local ingredients, together with a bar and lounge. A 30,000 square foot (2,800 square meter) Six Senses Spa and fitness center is housed in the original women’s palace and features an extensive Ayurveda program, meditation and Six Senses Integrated Wellness programs. The architect Nikola Bašić harbored the hotel, the oil mill and tasting room inside a hundred-year-old organic olive grove. The facilities are built from stone harvested from the olive grove. The interiors feature designer furniture in perfect sync with nature, throughout 8 deluxe accommodation units. 23 members of the villa crew learned the ropes tasked only with making our guests feel comfortable on their journey brimming with delight.
